MikroTik FTC21 IP55 Fiber-to-Copper Converter SwOS
The MikroTik FTC21 is a weatherproof IP55 managed fiber-to-copper media converter — one 2.5G-capable SFP port bridging to two 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet copper ports, running SwOS Lite with VLAN support, SNMP, ACL packet filtering, traffic shaping, and interface monitoring. 802.3af/at PoE-in and DC jack (24–57V), passive cooling, 3W without attachments, 4W max, -40°C to +70°C. Includes 48V adapter, Gigabit PoE injector, and K-81 fastening set. USD 59.00. The correct managed media converter for bringing fiber connectivity to copper Ethernet devices in outdoor and harsh environments — with SwOS Lite management where a dumb converter provides none.

The MikroTik FTC21 is not a dumb media converter. A dumb media converter does one thing — it converts a fiber signal to a copper Ethernet signal with no intelligence, no management interface, no VLAN awareness, and no visibility into what is passing through it. The FTC21 does the same signal conversion and adds a full SwOS Lite managed switch operating system on top — giving the network operator interface monitoring, VLAN configuration, SNMP reporting, traffic shaping, and Layer 2/3/4 ACL-based packet filtering on a USD 59.00 outdoor-rated device. For network operators who have relied on unmanaged media converters and had no visibility into what was happening at the fiber-to-copper boundary, the FTC21 is a direct upgrade at a competitive price point.
The SFP port supports 2.5G — the FTC21 is not limited to 1G fiber uplinks. A 2.5G SFP module (sold separately) allows the FTC21 to terminate a 2.5 Gbps fiber connection and distribute it across the two Gigabit Ethernet copper ports. For deployments where a 2.5G fiber uplink feeds a location that currently has only Gigabit Ethernet copper infrastructure, the FTC21 bridges the speed gap — the 2.5G fiber arrives at the FTC21, which switches traffic across the two Gigabit Ethernet ports to downstream copper devices. SFP module compatibility should be confirmed with your MikroTik distributor — not all SFP modules are compatible with all MikroTik SFP ports, and the 2.5G SFP module type (SR, LR, ER, direct-attach copper) must match the fiber type and run length at the deployment location.
SwOS Lite is the management platform. While RouterOS provides full routing, firewall, and VPN capabilities, SwOS Lite is MikroTik's switch-optimised operating system — lighter weight, focused on Layer 2 switching management, and appropriate for a media converter application where routing and VPN are not required. The specific SwOS Lite capabilities on the FTC21 are:
- **Interface monitoring and management** — real-time port status, link speed, duplex, and traffic statistics accessible via the SwOS Lite web interface and SNMP
- **VLAN support** — configure VLAN tagging, trunking, and port-based VLAN segmentation across the FTC21's ports — essential for multi-tenant fiber deployments where traffic from different customers must be isolated through the same physical fiber link
- **SNMP reporting** — integrate the FTC21 into an existing SNMP-based network monitoring system — port status, traffic counters, and device health visible in the NMS alongside other managed switches and routers
- **Basic traffic shaping** — limit bandwidth on individual ports — relevant for service providers who need to enforce per-customer bandwidth tiers at the fiber-to-copper handoff point
- **Advanced ACL packet filtering** — filter, account, and VLAN-tag packets based on Layer 2 (MAC address, Ethernet type), Layer 3 (IP address, protocol), and Layer 4 (TCP/UDP port) header conditions — a capability level that exceeds what most media converters in this price range provide
The ACL capability is the most significant differentiator from comparable media converters. Layer 2/3/4 ACL-based filtering at the fiber-to-copper boundary allows the network operator to enforce access control policies, block specific traffic types, and perform VLAN tagging decisions based on packet content — not just port assignment. For a service provider terminating a fiber uplink at a customer premises and needing to enforce traffic isolation and access policy at the handoff point, the FTC21's ACL capability provides the policy enforcement mechanism that an unmanaged converter cannot.
The IP55 weatherproof enclosure is the hardware differentiator for outdoor deployment. IP55 provides complete dust protection and protection against water jets from any direction — the same IP rating as the NetBox 5 ax and one level above the IP54 rating of most other outdoor MikroTik products in this batch. The FTC21 can be mounted outdoors on a wall, pole, or enclosure surface in direct exposure to rain, dust, and outdoor humidity without an additional weatherproof housing. For fiber-to-copper conversions at outdoor distribution points — a street cabinet, a building entry point, a rooftop equipment mount — the IP55 rating eliminates the need for an additional outdoor enclosure around the converter.
Power is dual-input flexible. 802.3af/at PoE-in (24–57V) on one of the Ethernet ports allows the FTC21 to be powered from a PoE switch or injector — a single Ethernet cable carries both power and data to the FTC21's copper side, with no separate DC power run to the mounting point. The DC jack (24–57V) provides direct power supply input when a PoE source is not available at the installation location. Both inputs cover the same 24–57V voltage range — the included 48V 0.95A power adapter and Gigabit PoE injector provide complete out-of-box power flexibility for either input method.
Maximum power consumption is 4W fully loaded and 3W without attachments — the second-lowest power draw in this product batch after the Groove 52 (6W). For a media converter that runs continuously and unattended, low power draw is a direct operating cost reduction over multi-year deployment lifetimes.
The 88E6341 switch chip (Marvell) is the hardware switching engine — a Gigabit switch chip with hardware-accelerated VLAN, QoS, and ACL processing. The hardware switching engine ensures that the FTC21's VLAN and ACL operations do not create CPU-bound forwarding bottlenecks — traffic classification and switching decisions are executed in hardware at line rate.
The K-81 fastening set and ceiling mount hardware included in the kit cover the standard installation scenarios for a compact managed media converter — wall mount, ceiling mount, and surface mount without additional hardware purchase.
**MTBF:** ~100,000 hours at 25°C — consistent with the wAP LTE kit 2024 and Groove 52 in this product batch.
